Destruction in environmental, social, and political spheres is on the rise. It feels as if the world is falling apart. However, such dynamics are not unique in history. If we can momentarily emerge from the bubble of the present and focus on the process rather than obsess over the moment, we will see that we are part of a long continuity.

Robo Švarc will present a lecture titled Revolt and Solidarity at JAMA 78—an information-dense exploration of interconnected contexts, delivered in the way only he can: “We’ll take a closer look at the phenomenon of revolt and its essential nature. Where does the will to dissent against something unacceptable come from? When does it align with concrete solidarity? Together, we’ll reflect on various methods, techniques, and strategies of these historical treasures in diverse engaged, artivist, and performative formats.

True revolt is an act that, always and everywhere, recognizes life in global dignity as the highest value. Because life is no mistake. From this perspective, the first article of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union—‘Human dignity is inviolable’—is an act of revolt. It is aimed against all unbearable brutalities and the senseless and careless sacrifice of lives in the two world wars, after which Europe as we know it began to take shape.”

Robo Švarc is a visual artist, curator, author, and translator. He studied painting at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 2021, he published his book Non Exit and translated The Congo Tribunal by Milo Rau. He is currently working on a translation of The Art of Assembly – Contemporary Political Theatre by Florian Malzacher.
