Ukrainian artist Kasha Potrohosh will present a new performance at JAMA 78 titled Pharmakon – Feminist Radical Liturgy and Liberal Exorcism.

In her work, Kasha uses magic as a tool to deconstruct the binary structures of patriarchy and capitalism. Through her pieces, she challenges fixed constructs of gender roles and stereotypes, with the aim of fostering social therapy and broader societal reflection, including feminist and environmental discourse. Empathy plays a central role in her art, along with the ability to transform personal experiences and introspective reflections into universal messages. Her works often explore themes of identity, mental states, existence, and humanity’s relationship to nature and society.

In Pharmakon, Kasha draws inspiration from ancient folk spells, recipes, and incantations, many of which carry heavy and morbidly misogynistic narratives. She transforms these archaic texts into feminist curses, using dark magic as a tool to “burn away” patriarchy and the toxic systems that exploit both people and nature. The performance incorporates symbolism, spells, and rituals, utilizing natural elements linked to folk heritage to forge connections between the audience and traditions. In Kasha’s work, magic is not just a mystical element but also a means of expressing resistance to violence and injustice. Through song and screams, she expresses pain while simultaneously manifesting respect and equality in both personal and public spaces.

Kasha Potrohosh completed her university studies at the Department of Intermedia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. She is currently based in Bratislava and Ostrava.
