Viktor Fuček is a terrapeut, urban shaman and performer who uses ritual in the search for environmental consciousness. To this end, he creates paintings, installations, and performances that push the boundaries of what is usually perceived as common space and demonstrate how experimental practices can help find new strategies to solve the problems of contemporary society. He studied fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, the Australian National University in Canberra, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Die Angewandte in Vienna, and architecture at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. In 2022 he successfully completed his doctorate at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica with his dissertation Architecture of Internal Relations, focusing on transit zones of performance and architecture.
At JAMA 77’s off-program, Viktor will present an opening performance for his new exhibition project In Dividuum, in which he presents to the visitors of the Julo Binder Gallery a mutual dialogue with non-humans in search of their consciousness. The relational epistemology represented by these entities is based on self-identification rooted in relationships with others, rather than on any distinctive features of the “I”. Mutual non-verbal dialogue will seek to reveal their being, while reinventing an animistic approach to the world. The new animism opens possibilities for refinement of the world, mutual empathy and healing, because it sees the world not as a dualistic, hierarchical relationship between humans and other non-spiritual beings and objects, but as a relational network of differently animated, enthusiastic and agitated beings. As Graham Harvey writes: “The world is full of persons, only some of whom are human, and this life is always lived in relation to others. Animism is lived in different ways, which consist in learning to behave respectfully (carefully and constructively) towards and among other persons.”
