THURSDAY Oct 10, 16:00 @ Banská Belá Library

This year, Artforum Publishing will donate 15 books from its catalog to the local library in Banská Belá as part of JAMA. Among them will be books by Zuzana Mojžišová, who will meet with her publisher and the founder of Artforum Publishing, Vladimír Michal, for a discussion at the library. Together, they will talk about Zuzana’s work and the challenges of writing, publishing, and selling quality books in Slovakia—especially in a time that is not favorable to books.

Zuzana Mojžišová is a writer and educator. She studied screenwriting at VŠMU in Bratislava, where she currently teaches at the Department of Film Studies. She debuted in 1997 with the short story collection Afrodithé and has since published more than ten other books, including Kristus v okne a iné miniatúry this year. Two of her books (Bon Voyage and Modus Vivedni) made it to the final ten for the Anasoft Litera Award.

In addition to books for adults, she writes children’s literature and is the author of what is likely the first Slovak gamebook for young readers, Havran v okne, Galandia a iné príhody. She has also written a social travelogue, Za rómskym ľudom, which is part of the ethnomusicological research Šilalo paňori (Studená vodička), and writes film reviews.

Artforum Publishing was established in 2007 when a group of people working in the now-iconic bookstore of the same name with branches across Slovakia decided to address the lack of key books by domestic and foreign authors on their shelves (especially their own).

The publishing house is officially located at Koza Street 20 in Bratislava, in the basement of the Artforum bookstore, but most of the work, meetings, and decisions take place in the Michal family’s living room after putting the youngest member of the publishing team to bed. It mainly publishes fiction, but its catalog also includes children’s books, a few non-fiction titles, and several poetry collections.

Artforum Publishing focuses on releasing books for thoughtful people that will accompany them on their greatest adventure—the adventure of thinking—and ensures that their design and processing are of the quality they deserve.
